1923 First known record of high school tennis. The following is a caption from the adjacent picture from the Oregonian: at left: Henry Neer of Washington high school, winner of boys’ singles championship in annual tennis tournament of Portland high schools, completed on M.A.A.C. courts. Center: F.E. Harrigan, instructor at Washington high under whose leadership the net tourney has grown to be an event of great importance. At right: Jane Cochran of Jefferson high, who won the girls’ singles title on the Irvington club courts.

1936 Boys state tournament started – conducted at the Irvington Club. The tournament was limited to 1 classification

1946 Girls state tournament started – conducted at the Irvington Club. The boy’s tournament was at Grant high school.

1951 State tournament moved to the Oregon State University courts in Corvallis.

1971 The boys and girls 2 day state tournament moved to Mt Hood Community College. The first day of the girl’s tournament was held at the Portland Tennis Center.

1973 Roseburg wins the boy’s state team championship for the 10th time in 13 years. The team was coached by Al Hoffman

1979 The tournament went from 1 to 2 classifications: AAA and AA/A/B.

1980 Doris Popple selected by Sports Illustrated as the National High School Tennis Coach of the Year.

1981 The boys and girls 2 day state tournament moved to Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton. The first day of the girl’s tournament was held at the Mt Hood Community College.

1986 The boys and girls state high school tournament was extended from a 2 day event to a 3 day event. It also reverted back to a single classification. It continued to be hosted at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center with the 1st 2 days of the girls tournament held at Mt Hood Community College.

1993 The tournament reverted back to two classifications: 4A and combined 3A/2A/1A.

2007 The tournament expanded to 3 categories: 6A, 5A, and combined 4A/3A/2A/1A.
