The Highlands Racquet Club opened for business in 1929 as part of a real estate development owned by Lee Bruce Menefee. Located in Portland’s West Hills The Racquet Club included a pool, clubhouse and tennis courts. The name would be changed in 1945 to simply “The Racquet Club.”
The first tournament scheduled at the Highlands Racquet Club was in 1932.
Teaching pros included George Lyttleton-Rogers (1950); Hugh Findlay (1956); Bill Rose (1974); Dick Lenker (1984).
Construction of two indoor courts began in 1973. It was designed by the same architectural/engineering firm that developed the Portland Tennis Center. The facility was financed by capital improvement bonds sold to members.
